The action of Boniva is based on its affinity for hydroxyapatite , which is part of mineral matrix of bone. It inhibits osteoclast activity and reduces bone resorption and turn over. Precaution:
Boniva tablet should not be taken if patient cannot sit upright or stand for at least one full hour. Boniva can cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus (the tube that connects mouth and stomach). The patient need to stay upright for at least 60 minutes after taking this medication. Boniva tablet should be taken first thing in the morning, at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before eating or drinking anything or taking any other medicine. Each dose should be taken with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of water. Only plain water (not mineral water) shold be used when taking a Boniva tablet.For at least the first 60 minutes after taking a Boniva tablet, patient should not lie down or recline;Noting other than plain water can be taken and other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids should not be taken. The tablet should not be chewed or suked at all. Side effects:

Symptoms of this condition may include jaw pain, swelling, numbness, loose teeth, gum infection, or slow healing after injury or surgery involving the gums. Other conditions associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw include blood clotting disorders, anemia (low red blood cells), and a pre-existing dental problems.
